Description
This design presents Mt. Fuji as seen from Tagonoura Bay in Shizuoka, a vantage point celebrated in classical Japanese poetry. Fresh snowfall on the upper slopes of Fuji contrasts with the darker, calmer surface of the bay below, organizing the image into a dialogue between the cold upper world of the mountain and the terrestrial foreground. Hasui rendered Fuji's cone with careful attention to the irregular line of snow coverage below the summit. The bay and sky are printed with layered bokashi that produces a gradient from pale horizon to deeper blue overhead. Published by Watanabe Shozaburo in the oban format standard for Hasui's landscape designs, this is among the earlier impressions of the composition and exhibits the strong, fresh pigment application associated with first-edition printings.
