Description
This impression of the Tagonoura Bay design shows Mt. Fuji's snow-covered peak rising above the bay's calm winter surface, a subject rooted in classical landscape iconography. Hasui's composition situates the viewer at water level, using the flat horizontal of the shoreline or bay to emphasize the vertical height of the mountain. The snow line across Fuji's upper slopes is printed with careful attention to the irregular, naturalistic contour of the snowfall rather than a stylized idealization. Graduated bokashi in the sky and reflective water surface creates atmospheric recession. Variations in this impression relative to others in the group — particularly in the depth of the sky tone and the saturation of the water passages — suggest it may derive from a reprinted block or a later edition produced to meet continued demand for this popular design.
