Description
Tagonoura, a bay on the northern coast of Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, has been associated with views of snow-capped Mt. Fuji since the Man'yoshu anthology of the eighth century. Hasui's composition frames Fuji's white summit above the bay's shoreline, the fresh snow rendering the peak distinctly against a pale winter sky. Pine trees or fishing vessels at the water's edge provide foreground interest and a sense of scale. The gradation of the sky through successive bokashi applications gives the upper register a cold atmospheric depth characteristic of Hasui's winter landscapes. This impression is one of multiple extant examples of the design; variations in the depth of the sky bokashi, the saturation of the water, and the color of the printed margins are indicators used to sequence impressions chronologically.
