Description
This impression presents Hasui's established composition of Mt. Fuji as seen from Tagonoura Bay, with the mountain's snow-draped upper zone contrasted against the quieter blue of the winter sky and the flat plane of the bay. The design was produced in multiple editions under Watanabe Shozaburo and later under other publishers following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake's disruption to the original block inventory, making edition identification relevant to both attribution and dating. The quality of the bokashi gradation in the sky and the sharpness of the coast's printed detail can indicate whether an impression was pulled early in the production run, when blocks were at their sharpest, or later. The compositional structure — mountain above, water below, with the horizon as a dividing axis — reflects Hasui's characteristic approach to layering a scene into legible horizontal registers.
