Description
This impression of Hasui's dawn Fuji composition captures the volcano's snow-covered cone emerging from pre-sunrise atmosphere, when the sky grades from deep indigo at the zenith to pale rose and amber near the horizon. Hasui employed graduated bokashi printing across multiple sky blocks to achieve the chromatic transition characteristic of the shin-hanga palette. The foreground likely features a coastal plain or pine silhouettes to establish spatial depth against the mountain's iconic profile. As one of multiple surviving impressions of this design, this print reflects the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo's practice of issuing successive runs over years, with subtle variations in sky tone and snow coloration across states. Fuji at dawn was among Hasui's most commercially successful subject categories, combining meisho-e landscape tradition with the atmospheric realism central to shin-hanga's appeal.
