Description
A second impression state of Hasui's Suruga Bay Fuji composition, offering the view across the water from Yui-machi on the historic Tokaido route. In successive runs of shin-hanga prints, printers working from unchanged woodblocks could vary atmospheric effects by adjusting the water content applied to the washi before inking, producing softer or crisper transitions in graduated passages. Differences in sky coloration or the tone of Suruga Bay between this and related impressions reflect such natural variation in hand-printing. The composition's appeal lies in its spatial breadth: the large expanse of water creates a visual pause before Fuji rises on the far shore, framed by open sky. Hasui's Suruga subjects engage directly with the Tokaido landscape tradition, acknowledging Hiroshige's influence while updating the palette and atmospheric sensibility for the Taisho and Showa eras.
