Description
This print depicts Mt Fuji as seen from Yui-machi, a post town along the old Tokaido highway in Suruga Province (present-day Shizuoka Prefecture), where the road narrows between the cliffs of Satta Pass and Suruga Bay. Hasui's composition from this vantage likely frames the mountain across the wide blue expanse of Suruga Bay, with the shoreline, fishing boats, or coastal vegetation providing foreground structure. The Suruga perspective was celebrated in ukiyo-e from Hiroshige's time, and Hasui consciously engaged that tradition while updating it with shin-hanga's emphasis on naturalistic color gradation. The blue of the bay would have required multiple overprinted blue blocks, with the water's surface differentiated from the sky through variation in pigment density. This impression represents one of several surviving states of the composition, reflecting the design's sustained popularity.
