Description
Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes on the northern flank of Mt Fuji, provides the setting for this mirror-reflection composition. Hasui's print likely positions the mountain and its inverted image symmetrically divided by the lake's calm surface, a format that demands precise registration across multiple woodblocks to align the reflected and actual mountain profiles. The reflection subject tests a printmaker's skill in differentiating the crisp silhouette of the real mountain from the slightly broken, darker tonality of its water image. Lakeshore vegetation — pine branches, reeds, or a simple jetty — would frame the composition and interrupt the reflection to naturalistic effect. Lake Kawaguchi views had been a recurring subject in ukiyo-e, and Hasui's treatment employs the shin-hanga vocabulary of muted blues and atmospheric grays to render the lake's still, contemplative quality.
