Description
Mt Hodata, a peak in the Japanese mountain interior, is depicted here in a landscape composition characteristic of Hasui's travel prints from his journeys across Japan. The mountain's profile would anchor the upper register while the foreground establishes the season and setting through vegetation, water, or a village element. Unlike the iconic Mt Fuji, which carried established visual associations in the ukiyo-e tradition, less-familiar peaks like Hodata required Hasui to construct the compositional logic from observation rather than convention. The shin-hanga palette — subdued greens, grays, and earth tones for mountain landscapes — and the technical apparatus of bokashi gradation in the sky give the composition its atmospheric depth. Washi printed with multiple translucent layers produces the quality of mountain air that distinguishes Hasui's non-Fuji landscape subjects from more schematic treatments.
