Description
This print of Mt. Unzen in Hizen Province was likely produced during Hasui's documented travel through Kyushu, where he sketched sites for the publisher Watanabe's shin-hanga program. The Unzen massif's silhouette — composed of multiple peaks including Fugen-dake — lent itself to the layered spatial recession Hasui favored in mountain compositions. Atmospheric haze rendered through diluted ink washes softens the volcanic ridgeline, while a foreground element such as water, foliage, or a road anchors the viewer's position in the landscape. The oban-format sheet allows vertical emphasis characteristic of Hasui's travel prints from the Taisho and early Showa periods.
