Description
A second composition of Mt. Unzen in Hizen Province, this print likely presents a different vantage point or seasonal condition than its companion design. Hasui frequently revisited the same subject from altered angles or under changed atmospheric conditions, treating landscape as a variable of light and season rather than fixed geography. The volcanic peaks of Unzen, which erupted catastrophically in 1792, carry historical weight that Hasui's quieter aesthetic transforms into contemplative scenery. Gradations of indigo and grey in the sky, achieved through multiple applications of bokashi, are typical of Hasui's treatment of mountain subjects in this period.
