Description

Mt. Zao, straddling the border of Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures, is a volcanic range famed for its rime-ice formations known as juhyo, in which trees become encrusted with snow and ice into ghostly white columns. This print, carrying the subtitle indicating it is part of a series selecting one hundred scenic tourist destinations, likely depicts Zao under winter conditions, with the frozen landscape rendered in cool whites and pale blues. Hasui's technical command of gradated printing enabled him to suggest the weight and texture of accumulated snow through precise registration of color blocks on washi paper.
