Description
This second version of Hasui's Muroto Peninsula subject depicts Cape Muroto on the Pacific coast of Kochi Prefecture, a dramatically exposed promontory known for its ancient basalt formations and open-ocean weather. As a distinct edition or compositional variant, this version may differ from related printings in coloration, cloud arrangement, or the treatment of wave energy against the rocky shore. The cape's characteristic geology—flat-topped outcroppings worn smooth by centuries of surf and inclined at steep angles from tectonic activity—offers Hasui strong foreground structure contrasting against the expansive Pacific horizon. His coastal prints characteristically use carefully graduated bokashi to render tonal transitions in sky and water, with multiple impression passes building atmospheric sea light. The site's association with the Shikoku pilgrimage and Kōbō Daishi added a dimension of historical resonance to what is also a study in raw coastal geology. Printed on washi using hand-carved blocks in the shin-hanga manner.
