Description
This meisho-e depicts Nakayamadaira, a highland plateau in Miyagi Prefecture in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu. Hasui traveled extensively through the northeast during his sketching tours, and prints from this region characteristically feature spare, austere landscapes shaped by heavy seasonal weather. The composition likely renders an expansive flat terrain framed by distant hills or ridgelines, with the broad sky occupying a significant portion of the oban-format sheet. Hasui's publisher Watanabe Shozaburo employed skilled craftsmen who achieved nuanced gradations of grey and pale blue through bokashi shading in the sky and ground. The Tohoku prints tend toward quieter, less picturesque subject matter than his famous Kyoto or Kamakura views, and this design reflects Hasui's commitment to finding printworthy beauty in overlooked provincial landscapes.
