Description

This print depicts the Nikko region of Tochigi Prefecture, home to the Toshogu shrine complex and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hasui visited Nikko repeatedly and interpreted its landscapes across multiple compositions. A general Nikko view likely presents the cedar-lined approach to the shrine precinct, the Shinkyo sacred bridge, or the mountain scenery surrounding the Daiya River gorge — subjects that defined the area's visual identity. Hasui renders the dense cryptomeria forests with deep greens, their towering trunks framing architectural elements or distant mountain profiles. The print participates in the meisho-e tradition of depicting celebrated places, situating Nikko within Hasui's broader survey of Japanese sacred and scenic landscapes. Publisher Watanabe Shozaburo actively encouraged artists to document regional sites as part of the shin-hanga movement's cultural mission.
