Description
Lake Chuzenji sits at approximately 1,269 meters elevation in the Nikko mountains, formed by lava flows from Mount Nantai. The Utagahama shore on its southern bank provided Hasui with an open view across the water toward the mountain's volcanic profile. This impression is one of several versions of the composition, likely distinguished from others by its sky coloring, the degree of autumn foliage saturation, or the treatment of the lake surface. Hasui renders still mountain water with horizontal bokashi bands suggesting the calm, reflective quality of high-altitude lakes in autumn or late summer. Mount Nantai, a significant object of pilgrimage, dominates the background. The multiple printings of this subject reflect the composition's popularity and the sustained demand for Nikko-related subjects within the shin-hanga publishing market.
