Description
This print depicts Yumoto Onsen, the hot spring village at the northern edge of Nikko National Park in Tochigi Prefecture, situated near Lake Yunoko at roughly 1,500 meters elevation. Hasui likely rendered the scene in winter or early spring, when steam from the thermal springs mingles with cold mountain air, creating the layered atmospheric effects characteristic of his snow series. The surrounding cedars and lacquered hills of Nikko provided Hasui rich material for graduated bokashi skies and softly printed snowfall. As a shin-hanga landscape, the composition would foreground specific topographical features—the thatched or tiled rooflines of the inn district, the stream fed by volcanic springs—anchoring an otherwise quiet, contemplative scene in a recognizable geographical setting.
