Description
This second version of the Nishi Izu view of Fuji in changeable weather (Kisho no Fuji, 気象の富士) indicates either a separate state of the block or a distinct compositional study made during one of Hasui's sketching trips along the Izu Peninsula's western coast. The Nishi Izu coastline offers dramatic volcanic rock formations, pine headlands, and open water views toward Fuji across Suruga Bay. Variant printings of the same subject in Hasui's catalog sometimes differ in atmospheric conditions—one state showing clear morning light, another a rainy or overcast mood—reflecting shin-hanga's careful modulation of color and bokashi to convey meteorological specificity. The interplay of mountain, sea, and transient sky gives this subject its title's emphasis on the weather-dependent quality of the view.
