Edition period is the primary value driver for Hasui prints. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A through D types) consistently achieve 3–5× the price of posthumous reprints of the same design. Condition is the second key factor — unfaded colors, full margins, and absence of foxing or staining are essential. Subject matter (snow > rain > night > other) provides a further modifier within each edition tier.
Nishikiura Beach at Atami in Izu Province faces Sagami Bay from a cove just south of the main resort town, its calm water sheltered by rocky headlands. Hasui's 1940 print likely shows the cove in summer or early autumn — the warm blue of Sagami Bay in a sheltered setting, pine-covered rocks framing the composition. Atami was among the most fashionable resort destinations from Tokyo, and Nishikiura its quieter, more scenic alternative to the main beach.
