Description

This print depicts a hilltop vista in the Nishimigawa district of Sado Island, the large island in the Sea of Japan that Hasui visited on sketching expeditions. Sado's rural interior—terraced hillsides, scattered farmhouses, and the distant shimmer of the surrounding sea—provided Hasui with meisho-e subject matter distinct from the mainland. The composition likely employs a high vantage point to place the viewer above the treeline, allowing the horizon to dissolve into a pale, gradated sky achieved through successive bokashi passages. Hasui's characteristic restraint in color—muted greens, warm earth tones, and a softened blue distance—gives the scene a contemplative stillness. Printed on absorbent washi, the gradations between sky and land read as seamless atmospheric depth.
