Description
Ohmi (Ōmi Province) encompassed the region around Lake Biwa in present-day Shiga Prefecture, and this print depicts a landscape from that area. Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake, provided Hasui with compositional material he returned to repeatedly — broad expanses of water, distant mountains, and the characteristic humidity that suited his atmospheric effects. The image likely shows a lakeside village, a reed-lined shore, or an open expanse of water under seasonal weather conditions. Hasui's handling of the Ōmi region frequently emphasized horizontal space and tonal gradation, with bokashi transitions between sky and water conveying the damp, reflective quality of the lake basin. The print belongs to his broader documentation of provincial Japan under the shin-hanga publishing model.
