Description
Hasui depicted the coastal post town of Okitsu-cho in Suruga Province in several related compositions, each exploiting the pictorial possibilities of the bay between the Izu and Suruga shores. This design presents the village harbor and its immediate surroundings, likely showing low wooden structures, moored boats, and the expanse of Suruga Bay under a particular quality of light. Okitsu-cho's position at the foot of the Satta Pass made it one of the more visually distinctive stations on the Tokaido route, where the proximity of mountain, shore, and open sea created conditions for the layered spatial recession Hasui favored. The print belongs to a body of Tokaido-related work in which he measured his practice against the landscape ukiyo-e tradition while asserting the coloristic and tonal range made possible by collaboration with skilled Showa-period woodblock carvers and printers.
