Description
The third catalogued impression of the Pastel Fuji design concludes this group of related states. Comparative study of the three impressions can reveal how the sky block — the most technically demanding element in this soft-toned composition — aged across the print run. Later impressions often show a narrowing of the tonal range as the brushed bokashi becomes less controllable on a worn block surface, shifting the delicate pale palette toward flatter, less luminous color. Fuji prints by Hasui occupy a distinct place in the shin-hanga canon: departing from the dramatic effects of snow or storm compositions, this design engages the mountain as a quiet chromatic presence, filtered through atmospheric distance in a manner that recalls Hiroshige's softer travel-series treatments of the peak.
