Description
The third printing of Rain on Lake Matsue continues the series depicting rainfall over the lacustrine landscape of the Matsue area in Shimane Prefecture. As with the other states, the composition draws from Hasui's direct sketching of the site, a working method he maintained throughout his career despite later relying on his studio practice for final designs. In this state, minor variations in the sky bokashi or the treatment of the water surface may distinguish it from the first and second printings, though the overall composition remains consistent. The rain-on-lake subject allowed Hasui to explore the visual unity of gray sky and gray water, with only a narrow register of shoreline vegetation or architecture differentiating the two planes. Such compositions demonstrate his interest in atmospheric minimalism, compressing the landscape into bands of tone rather than detailed topographic description.
