Description
The Rikuchu Coast (陸中海岸) stretches along the Pacific shore of Iwate Prefecture in the Tohoku region, characterized by dramatic ria coastline — deep inlets, sheer sea cliffs, and isolated sea stacks — formed by the submergence of a formerly mountainous landscape. Hasui visited the area during his extensive travels through Japan and rendered its coastal geology with the directness that defined his landscape practice. The composition likely foregrounds one of the coast's characteristic rock formations rising from turbulent sea water, with the Pacific horizon visible beyond. Hasui's handling of ocean subjects relied on carefully layered flat color for the water — blues and greens built up through multiple block passes — combined with the textural contrast of rough cliff faces rendered in warm ochre and grey. The designation as a national park subject suggests this print may have been produced as part of a promotional series for the newly established park.
