Description
This second impression of Hasui's Rikuchu Coast composition captures the dramatic Pacific-facing cliffs and rock formations of what is now Sanriku Fukko National Park in Iwate Prefecture. The ria coastline here presented Hasui with vertical compositional structures — towering sea stacks, sheer headlands — that contrast with the horizontal expanses favored in his lake and river subjects. The sea in the foreground would be rendered in layered blues with whitecapped movement indicated through reserved paper or lightly printed passages, while the cliff faces carry the warm ochre and rust tones typical of the region's exposed coastal geology. Hasui produced prints documenting Japan's newly designated national parks during the 1950s, and the Rikuchu subjects belong to this late phase of his career, when his technical mastery remained fully intact but his compositional language had become somewhat more monumental in scale.
