Description
In this third impression of the Rikuchu Coast subject, the Pacific seascape along the Iwate coast is rendered with the characteristic contrast between the geological solidity of the coastal cliffs and the restless movement of the sea below. The Sanriku coast's distinctive topography — formed by the intersection of mountain ranges and the Pacific — provided Hasui with compositions markedly different from the interior lake and garden scenes that form the majority of his output. White foam at the base of sea stacks or along cliff faces would be achieved through reserved paper — areas left unprinted to read as the white of washi — a technique requiring precise registration across multiple block passes. The color range in this impression reflects the cooler, greyer tonal quality associated with later states, when the blocks producing the sky gradation had been smoothed by extended use.
