Description
This print renders Mt. Fuji at dawn — 富士の朝 translates literally as "Morning at Fuji" — likely depicting the snow-capped peak rising above a still body of water such as Lake Yamanaka or Lake Kawaguchi. Hasui's Fuji compositions typically employ graded bokashi in the sky to convey the cool, suffused light of early morning, with the mountain's reflection dissolved into the surface below. The shin-hanga production process, overseen by publisher Doi Hangaten or Watanabe Shozaburo, allowed the skilled printer to achieve delicate tonal transitions across the oban-format sheet. Multiple impressions of this design exist with subtle variation in sky gradation and ink density, suggesting sustained demand over successive print runs.
