Description

This print depicts the panoramic view from Satta Pass (Satta Toge) in Shizuoka Prefecture, one of the canonical Tokaido meisho and the probable first or primary edition among Hasui's treatments of this subject. The Pass commands a sight line across Suruga Bay to Mt. Fuji, and Hasui's composition—following the tradition established by Hiroshige—uses the bay's curved horizon to create a spatial dialogue between water, the distant volcanic cone, and the steep coastal terrain in the foreground. The mountain's snowcapped summit, rendered with reserved paper white and cool blue gradients, rises above an atmospheric horizon achieved through fine bokashi transitions. The sea surface carries the reflected light of the sky, requiring close tonal calibration between multiple color blocks. The Tokaido pass setting connects this print to a long meisho-e tradition while also demonstrating Hasui's independent interest in dramatic coastal topography and the relationship between monumental landscape features and the scale of the picture plane.
