Description
From the 'Nihon fukei senshu' series, this print depicts Onsengadake — a volcanic peak in Kumamoto Prefecture — as seen across the water from the Amakusa islands. The view across the Shiranui Sea toward a distant mountain range offered Hasui an expansive horizontal composition anchored by water in the foreground and a layered recession of hills and sky. The Onsengadake range, associated with hot spring activity, may be rendered with a faint haze or atmospheric softness consistent with Hasui's treatment of distant landforms seen from island vantage points. The contrast between the nearer island landscape in silhouette and the pale, receding mountains demonstrates Hasui's control of spatial depth through tonal variation rather than Western-style perspective.
