Description
Part of the 'Nihon fukei senshu' series, this print depicts Suhara, a post town along the Nakasen-do highway in the Kiso River valley of Nagano Prefecture. Suhara was one of the eleven Kiso post towns, a narrow settlement wedged between the forested Kiso Mountains and the rushing Kiso River. Hasui's composition likely captures the characteristic topography of the valley — steep wooded slopes, a swift river, and traditional roadside architecture confined within the gorge. The dense cedar and hinoki forests of the Kiso region provided Hasui with deep greens and the textured shadows of old-growth woodland. The enclosed mountain landscape contrasts with his more expansive coastal views, and the vertical compression of the composition reflects the actual physical narrowness of the Kiso valley.
