Description
From Hasui's 'Tokaido fukei senshu' (Selection of Views of the Tokaido) series, this print depicts the Banyu River in Kanagawa Prefecture, which the Tokaido highway crossed near Odawara. River crossings were a recurring subject in Tokaido imagery since the time of Hiroshige, and Hasui revisited the theme with a shin-hanga sensibility — attending to light, weather, and mood rather than narrative. The composition likely uses the river's surface as a broad reflective element in the foreground, with the far bank and surrounding hills providing a layered backdrop. The 'Tokaido fukei senshu' series, published by Watanabe, systematically documented the old highway's scenic points in the early twentieth century, bridging Edo-period geographic print traditions with modernist attention to atmosphere.
