Description

This oban-format shin-hanga print depicts Senjōgahara (日光戦場ヶ原, literally 'Battlefield Plain'), the highland wetland plateau in the Nikkō mountains at approximately 1,400 meters elevation. The Japanese title confirms the subject as this well-documented alpine marsh, which Hasui depicted in multiple prints during his travels through the Nikkō region. This composition likely differs from his other Senjōgahara print in season, atmospheric condition, or compositional framing — possibly emphasizing the foreground marsh vegetation, a path or stream cutting through the wetland, or specific mountain forms under a different quality of light. The high-altitude luminosity of Senjōgahara, distinct from the coastal and lowland tonality that dominates much of Hasui's work, required careful management of the bokashi gradations used to suggest sky and open space. The plateau's spare horizontal openness, without the enclosed drama of valley or coast, is characteristic of Hasui's approach to highland subjects, where the sense of sky and distance dominates over architectural or coastal incident. Printed by Watanabe Shōzaburō's workshop on washi.
