Description
This design of Senju-no-taki at Akame Gorge in Mie Prefecture represents Hasui's engagement with one of the region's most celebrated natural subjects—the tallest of the gorge's forty-eight named cascades. Whether this constitutes a different printing, a later reworking of the composition, or a distinct vantage point from the companion design, the subject remains the fall's narrow vertical drop through dark, lichen-covered cliffs into the mist-filled basin below. Akame's forested gorge presented the kind of atmospheric challenge Hasui sought: the interplay of moving water, rising spray, filtered canopy light, and deep shadow within a confined rock passage. The Watanabe workshop's fine bokashi printing would have been essential to rendering the humidity of the site—the graded tones of sky glimpsed above the treetops, the gradual dissolution of white foam into gray shadow at the water's surface.
