Description
This composition of the Shinkyo Bridge at Nikko may represent a variant design or alternate viewing angle of the famous vermilion footbridge spanning the Daiya River. The bridge, constructed in 1636 and rebuilt in 1904, leads toward the Toshogu and Futarasan shrines in the mountain forests of Tochigi Prefecture. Hasui's print likely renders the scene in a seasonal mode — the autumn foliage of the surrounding beeches and maples would provide warm contrast to the cool river below, while a winter version would position the red bridge against grey sky and snow-laden cedars. The depth of the mountain ravine and the reflective river surface gave Hasui opportunity to exercise bokashi gradation across multiple color planes.
