Description
Shinagawa, historically the first post station on the Tokaido road south of Edo, appears here in one of Hasui's depictions of this coastal district. By Hasui's era, Shinagawa had been absorbed into metropolitan Tokyo but retained a working harbor and remnants of its merchant-town character. The print likely depicts the Shinagawa waterfront or a canal scene, possibly at dawn, dusk, or under rain — conditions Hasui favored for compressing the urban landscape into flat tonal bands. The harbor at Shinagawa offered views of moored fishing boats, warehouses, and the distant silhouette of Tokyo Bay — a subject bridging the meisho-e tradition of Edo's historic landmarks with Hasui's modernist interest in the changed face of the twentieth-century city.
