Description
A second interpretation of the Shinakawa bridge area along the riverbank in Handa, Owari Province (Bishu), this print revisits the canal townscape Hasui found productive enough to render in multiple editions. Handa's historic waterways, once vital to the region's brewing industry, offered the kind of quiet commercial architecture — low warehouses, wooden wharves, moored boats — that Hasui favored as meisho-e subjects outside of Tokyo. As with related variants, the composition likely exploits the reflective surface of the canal to double the tonal weight of the sky. Differences between this and other Handa prints may involve atmospheric conditions, the handling of foliage, or the position of figures along the embankment.
