Description
Shirozaki is a rocky coastal promontory on the Sea of Japan coast of the Tajima district in what is now northern Hyogo Prefecture. The jagged volcanic rock formations of this coastline—characteristically white and wave-worn—give the cape its name. Hasui visited this region, which encompasses Kinosaki Onsen, during his extensive travels to document Japanese landscapes across the country. A coastal view from Shirozaki would present the broad expanse of the Sea of Japan, rocky outcroppings in the foreground or middle ground, and the particular quality of light on overcast or clear days along the Japan Sea coast. The print likely employs a strong horizontal orientation, using the shoreline and sea to create layered registers of rock, water, and sky.
