Description
Shirozaki, a wave-cut headland on the Sea of Japan coast in Tajima district near Kinosaki, is rendered here in Hasui's characteristic meisho-e tradition. The composition positions the viewer at the water's edge, looking toward rocky outcroppings silhouetted against a broad expanse of sea and sky. Hasui's publisher Watanabe Shozaburo coordinated the block cutting and printing, with the carvers executing fine detail in the stone texture through close parallel cuts. Bokashi gradation in the sky and water gives atmospheric depth. Kinosaki's surrounding landscapes frequently appeared in Hasui's travel series as he journeyed to record regional scenery across Japan.
