Description
This impression of Skirt of Mt. Fuji represents one of the intermediate states in a design Hasui produced depicting the foothills and plains surrounding Fujisan. The composition emphasizes the flat, open terrain that characterizes much of the Fuji environs—the Fuji Five Lakes plateau, the Gotemba Plain, or the Susono lowlands—allowing the cone to dominate the skyline without competing foreground elements. Ink gradation in the sky passes from pale blue-white near the summit to deeper tone at the upper margin of the print. Differences between impressions in this design typically appear in the blue pigment used for the mountain's shadowed face or the depth of color in the foreground vegetation block.
