Description
This impression records Hasui's composition of Yagumobashi Bridge at Nagata Jinja in Kobe under winter snow. The Nagata district suffered extensive destruction in the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, making Hasui's pre-war record of the neighborhood's shrine and bridge an incidental document of a landscape that no longer exists in that form. The composition likely features the bridge as a strong horizontal or arched element crossing the center of the picture plane, with snow-covered pines or shrine buildings providing vertical contrast. Hasui's method of on-site sketching, followed by studio refinement before block-cutting, allowed him to edit compositional elements while preserving the essential character of the location. The cool pigments typical of his snow prints — prussian blue, grey, and white-reserved washi — give the scene its characteristic winter stillness.
