Description
A later impression of the Yagumobashi Bridge composition, depicting the stone or wooden bridge near Nagata Shrine in Kobe during snowfall. Nagata Jinja, one of Kobe's most important Shinto shrines, sits in the Nagata district west of the city center, and Yagumobashi crosses the waterway that runs through the shrine grounds. Hasui's regional landscape series brought less-depicted locations to a national audience through the distribution network established by publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. In snow compositions of bridge subjects, Hasui typically emphasizes the curve of the bridge railing as a compositional line against the flattened white ground, with water reflecting grey winter sky beneath. The contrast between the dark structural elements and the white snow surface is achieved through selective ink application on the key block.
