Description
This second version of Arakawa no Yuki represents either a distinct composition of the same river subject or a reprinting with modified block or color specifications. Hasui produced variant treatments of several river subjects, sometimes shifting the compositional focus between near bank and far shore, or altering the time of day and degree of snow cover. The Arakawa River's flat, agricultural flood plain provided a consistent visual character — low horizons, wide skies, and the horizontal extension of snow-covered ground — that remained identifiable across compositional variations. Publisher Watanabe Shozaburo periodically issued reworked versions of popular subjects to meet continued demand while refreshing the aesthetic. Both Arakawa versions share the subject's essential qualities: the meditative stillness of a snow-covered lowland river, the restraint of a palette built from gray, white, and pale blue, and the unpretentious regionalism that distinguishes Hasui's Kanto river work from his more celebrated landmark prints.
