Description

Kamezaki, in the Chita Peninsula of Aichi Prefecture (historically Bishu, the eastern part of Owari province), was a prosperous port town known for its sake and miso brewing industries and its maritime trade along Ise Bay. Hasui's composition would likely show the waterfront—warehouses, moored cargo vessels, and the flat coastal landscape characteristic of the Tokai region. The Bishu coastal subjects in the Tabi miyage series differ from Hasui's mountainous or gorge-based compositions; here the land is low, the horizon wide, and the visual interest found in industrial maritime activity and the quality of light over still harbor water. Bokashi printing in the sky would render the diffuse light over the bay, while flat color blocks define the hulls of vessels and the geometric forms of brewery storehouses. Kamezaki's inclusion reflects Hasui's attention to working port towns alongside conventionally scenic destinations.
