Description

Kinosaki Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture (historically Tajima province) is a hot spring resort town characterized by a willow-lined central canal, seven historic bathhouses, and two-story wooden inns fronting the waterway. Hasui's composition centers on the canal and its reflections, with the hanging branches of willows framing the view and the lantern-lit facades of ryokan creating warm tonal accents against a cooler dusk or evening sky. The deliberate contrast between the organic, drooping line of willow branches and the geometric regularity of inn architecture—tile roofs, shoji screens, wooden lattice—is a formal device Hasui employed in multiple onsen-town subjects. The water surface of the canal doubles the color of the sky above and the light of the lanterns, organizing the print's tonal range vertically through reflection. Kinosaki was a popular destination on the San'in railway line, accessible from Osaka, and its picturesque townscape made it a recurring subject in travel imagery of the period.
