Description

The subtitle Kumoribi (cloudy day) identifies this as one of several weather-variant prints Hasui made of Matsue in Izumo Province, distinguishing it from companion views depicting crescent moon or hazy moonlight at the same location. Hasui was drawn repeatedly to overcast conditions, which flattened tonal contrast and produced the diffuse, grey-toned atmospheric effects he achieved through careful gradation of grey and blue-grey pigments applied to dampened washi during printing. Matsue's San'in coast geography—frequently cloudy, the sky often featureless or layered with high cloud—made it a natural subject for this kind of atmospheric study. The cloudy-day variant likely suppresses strong shadows and eliminates reflected glare on water, replacing the luminosity of moonlit or twilight views with a muted, subdued palette. This print belongs to the Tabi miyage dai sanshu (Third Series) published by Watanabe Shozaburo.
