Description
Murotsu is a historic harbor in Suo Province, present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture, long associated with Kitamaebune coastal trade. Hasui likely depicted the sheltered anchorage with wooden vessels moored along the quay or at anchor in still water, characteristic of his Inland Sea harbor subjects. The quiet of a fishing port at dawn, dusk, or under grey overcast skies suited Hasui's preference for atmospheric conditions over direct sunlight. Reflections of hulls, rigging, and shoreline structures in calm water are a formal device Hasui used consistently in coastal compositions to double the pictorial space and create compositional symmetry. This print would have been part of a regional travel series, recording port towns of western Honshu visited on sketching tours.
