Description
Tagonoura, the bay at the base of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, was a celebrated meisho-e subject dating to the Man'yoshu poetry anthology. Hasui's composition likely positions the viewer at the shoreline or on calm water, with fishing boats or pine-edged banks framing a prospect toward Mount Fuji in the distance. The site's poetry associations made it a natural subject for shin-hanga landscape series. Hasui employed graduated bokashi to render the atmospheric transition between sky and water, and the oban format gave him room to balance horizontal tranquility against the mountain's vertical weight. Muted blues and grays typical of his coastal work create a meditative mood, while the stillness of the water surface suggests either dawn or late afternoon light.
