Description
Hasui's print of Teranohama depicts Kaiganji Beach on the Sanuki coast of Kagawa Prefecture (Shikoku), where a pine-edged sandy shore opens onto the Seto Inland Sea. The composition belongs to Hasui's regional landscape documentation in the meisho-e tradition, updated through shin-hanga's emphasis on atmospheric light and seasonal mood. The Inland Sea's characteristically flat, diffuse light—particularly on overcast or hazy days—suited Hasui's formal strengths: wide uninterrupted passages of water and sky built from graduated layers of thin pigment on dampened washi, with tonal transitions achieved through precisely controlled bokashi. Coastal pines with wind-shaped profiles provide contrast to the low horizontal ground of beach and sea. The composition's restrained palette and quiet mood reflect Hasui's consistent preference for scenes in which weather and season do more formal work than incident or figure.
