Description
A second edition impression of Hasui's Teranohama, Sanuki Coast composition, this print records Kaiganji Beach in Kagawa Prefecture, where a flat sandy shore meets the calm western waters of the Seto Inland Sea. Hasui traveled to Shikoku as part of his systematic documentation of regional landscapes for the Watanabe Shōzaburō publishing house, working from direct observation sketches that he later developed into finished designs. Coastal pine trees, their trunks bent by persistent sea winds, typically anchor one margin of Hasui's shore compositions, providing a framing vertical element against the horizontal sweep of beach and water. The Inland Sea's characteristic atmospheric haze softens distant island profiles into pale tonal suggestions, a quality Hasui achieved through successive light impressions of blue-gray pigment on dampened washi without hard printed outlines.
